Here’s a fun little data set from a statistics textbook I’m reading.
These are the distributions of last digits of ages reported on the 1880 and 1970 US Censuses. At least two interesting questions come to mind, one with a seemingly easy answer.
I used Plot.ly to create this simple bar graph, which I shared here.

My students and I experimented a bit with 3D printing at the end of the year (as part of my always-do-something-new strategy). This (5,3) Torus knot was one of our successes.
I see a lot of possibility for 3D printing in my classrooms next year, and I’m looking forward to thinking and learning more about it.
The geometry of a hyperbolic paraboloid makes it a good choice for a canopy. The posts of different heights create a natural path for rainwater to flow off the tarp, eliminating the chance of standing water collecting in puddles on top.
Except maybe for a single drop at the saddle point!
