I was surprised to find this compelling mathematical object at the end of a dark hallway in a nondescript hotel. The bending bands suggest level curves of some curious surface–and you can even see normal-like curves in its profile!
This arrangement of chocolates makes me think of triangulation, the process of approximating a curved surface by a collection of flat triangles. Approximating curved things with flat things is a classic move in mathematics, and is one of the fundamental ideas in Calculus. So, maybe this photograph should be titled “Calculus in a Chocolate Shop”?
As previously noted, there is plenty of mathematical fun to be had at Ikea!
And if taking pictures of cool tilings gets dull, why not trying tiling the plane yourself!
