Patrick Honner
My name is Patrick Honner. I teach mathematics at Brooklyn Technical High School, a large, public, specialized high school in Brooklyn, New York.
As a NYC public school teacher I have taught everything from Introductory Algebra to Multivariable Calculus. I mentor student research in mathematics, and I am actively involved in extracurricular mathematics programs both in my school and around New York City.
Math research is an instructional focus of mine. Independent, investigative, mathematical research projects can be crafted by and for students at all levels of knowledge, in all areas of interest. A primary objective of MrHonner.com is to exhibit the math all around us in order to stimulate question-posing and hypothesizing. These are the first steps in structuring a good mathematical investigation.
I am a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). You can view my profile here.
I am a three-time recipient of Math For America‘s Master Teacher Fellowship, and I am active in MfA’s professional community.
I spoke at TEDxNYED on creativity and mathematics, and you can watch the video here. I also hosted TEDxNYED the following year.
I was named runner-up for the inaugural Rosenthal Prize for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching, presented by the Museum of Mathematics.
I am a recipient of the Sloan Award for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics. The Fund for the City of New York, which presents the award, has been recognizing public service in New York City for the past 30 years.
I am a regular contributor to the New York Times Learning Network, which creates teacher and student resources from New York Times content. I have written math lesson plans and Test Yourself–Math questions for the LN. My bio can be seen here.
