Maybe because it put me in mind of the Mandelbrot set.

It does have a resemblance. Perhaps math is the origin of architecture design these days? Let me rethink that vague statement.
Well, I have a feeling that the scrolling on that door precedes knowledge of the Mandelbrot set by several hundred years, so these days are more likely those days.
